Data Mgmt and Visualization - Week 4 Assignment
Students who attempted suicide only considered for the report.

The univariate graph of percentage of kids who going for shopping with their father:

This graph is unimodal, with its highest peak at 89% of students responded NO to the question. So the students who attempted suicide or thinking seriously about suicide are not going much shopping with their parents.

The below graph is  univariate graph of percentage of kids who playing game with their father:
Most of students, say 88% of students responded No to the question. So as the above graph, students who are not playing game shows high suicide attempt rate.

The below graph is  univariate graph of percentage of kids who going for religious activities with their father
Most of students, say 88% of students responded No to the question. So as the above graph, shows students who are not playing game shows high suicide attempt rate.

The below three plotted graphs which shows close relation of these variables with the suicide attempt.

Data Mgmt and Visualization - Week 3 Assignment

I collapsed the responses for students who went for shopping, religious services and played game with their father to create three new variables: shopping, game, and religious. For shopping, game, and religious,  most commonly endorsed response were 3 in the rate of 51.55%, 48.88% and 47.63% respectively. That means students who attempted suicide or actually thought about it, don't have habit of doing any such activities with their father.

Data Mgmt and Visualization - Week 2 Assignment

In this assignment I have shown frequency distribution of the variables showing relations with parents, particularly activities with father. To refine the data we need only the information of adolescence who seriously think about suicide and who attempted for it. I have used logical statement used for sub-setting.

The screenshots of code and output have given below.

A random sample of 6,504 adolescents were asked the following question, “Have you gone shopping with your father in last 4 weeks?” Of the total number, about 30.01% chose category 7 which was a legitimate skip [has not had intercourse], and about 51.41% fell into category 0 (no).
For the next question, the same students were asked “Have you played a sport with your father in last 4 weeks?"  About 48.74% answered no and the same percentage 30.01%, as for first question skipped the question.
For the next question, "Have you gone to a religious service or church-related event in the last 4 week?” same percentage of students-  30.01%  skipped the question, and about 47.49% fell into category 0.

Data Mgmt and Visualization - Week 1 Assignment

My Data Analysis Research Topic is Ready

Background Story

I have registered for online course for Data Analysis in Coursera and my research topic is ready.

My Research Topic

Few months back I have read an article that says suicide rate in US climbing especially among adolescence. When I looked through code book for AddHealth , I recalled about that article and I would like to do my analysis on suicide rate. So now I am including all possible variables for my study.
made a decision that I would be exploring the association between relationship with parents and suicide rate. I add to my codebook variables reflecting the relationships of adolescence with their parents.

As a second topic I am interested to analyse whether physical health associated to mental health.

I considered following questions as my research questions.

Is relationship with parents and physical health associated with suicide rate?

I have considered variables in addhealth closely, the figures under the following topics seems closely related to suicide rates.

·         Parents letting their kids to make their own decisions
·         Leisure/household activities with father and no dad
·         Physical education and involvement in physical activities

My Code Book
Below you can find a screen-shot from the AddHealth code book with highlighted variables which correlations with suicide rate I would like to analyse.

Literature review

Hypothesis
Based on the literature review, I have developed a hypothesis about what I believe the association might be between these topics.I am giving my hypotheses below.

 1. Parents letting their kids to make their own decisions :
Hypothesis : There is a correlation between these two topics. ie. Kids who are having more freedom to take decision in their life, more they have tendency to do suicide.

2. Leisure/household activities with father and no dad:
Hypothesis : Kids who have more commitment to the family and house hold work have more attached to the family. Thus they feel they are getting enough support from the family. Thus reduced suicide rate.

3. Physical education and involvement in physical activities
Hypothesis: Kids who have poor physical health also have poor mental health.

As a whole I finalized my hypothesis as follows,

Suicide rate in adolescence is closely associated with the parent relationship and physical health
